Dear Friends, Here's the poem I've written for the Picture Book I've begun to illustrate
I am open to feedback, thoughts, suggestions, introductions to agents and or publishers....This book will have back pages about the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program and how to help save the Cloud Forest. Enjoy!
The Wondrous Cloud Forest (598 words)
Come travel with me on the trade winds,
across the South Pacific Sea,
high up in the tropical hills,
on the island of New Guinea.
Beneath billowing blankets of cool mountain mist,
deep into the woods…where exotic species exist!
See the world’s longest lizards, the littlest frogs,
bright blue butterflies, even small singing dogs!
Flowers like these are not found at your florist -
Wide-eyed are we in the wondrous cloud forest!
Are those tiny kangaroos, up in that tall tree?
They’re as cute as plush toys, yet as real as can be!
Only here, in this most mystical of places,
can one catch a glimpse, of their adorable faces.
Like many rare creatures apt to disappear,
These lovable tree kangaroos only live here.
It’s not just the animals for whom the forest is dear,
local people have long built their villages near.
It’s their neighborhood grocery convenience store,
filling their cupboards with food and much more.
It’s also their sanctuary where they take delight,
in messages from ancestors carried by firefly light!
Crowning this garden rests a twiggy tent top:
it’s the tree canopy - it’s a leafy-limbed mop!
It soaks sun and water right out of the breeze,
creating fresh air through the leaves on the trees.
All plants on the planet do plenty of this,
it’s the magic of science ~ called photosynthesis!
Every plant, everywhere, helps to clean up the air:
House plants, potted plants, even plants that have hair!
We can’t see them do it they’re very discreet,
but if they didn’t, boy would we feel the heat!
These cloud forest plants help us out a whole lot,
they help Mother Earth keep from getting too hot!
Medicines come from their leaves and their roots.
For vitamin sources you can’t beat their fruits!
Endlessly twirling… swirling… and whirling,
Tendrils… continuously curling,…unfurling!
A rhythm of buzzing, whizzing, and whirring,
this marvelous park is constantly stirring!
Shhh… then why is it so calm in the forest today?
Look, the tree kangaroos have something to say.
They don’t speak in words, but they want to convey,
the cloud forest’s at risk of going away.
There’s far too much digging, drilling, and chopping.
Tragically, too many trees have been dropping!
If the cloud forest trees can no longer grow,
all of the animals will have nowhere to go.
Many good people have answered the call
to save the cloud forest, for one and for all.
Scientists, artists, and business people too,
folks who love nature ~ like me and like you!
They’re helping the villagers live with more ease,
without chopping down all the kangaroos' trees.
They’re doing less hunting, they’re growing more crops,
This saves kangaroos, while feeding kids, moms, and pops!
Big bags of their beans travel over the sea,
to folks who are helping, by drinking coffee!
Growing coffee provides them with more ways and means,
to take care of their families from the sale of their beans!
the villagers are able to care for one and for all,
without having to make a single tree fall!
Give a great big hand to the people of New Guinea,
For they made a big promise: they signed a decree!
They proclaimed their cloud forest a protected land;
by taking this stand, they’ve done something quite grand!
To help spread the news and their positive thoughts,
they made tree kangaroos their loving mascots!
Their faces remind us, the cloud forest needs care,
send the cloud forest love, tell folks everywhere!
Much is being done, yet there’s still much to do…
Everyone can help, would you like to help too?
